Post Camino #10 – My next Camino…

I’ve decided on my next Camino –

From the lighthouse at Sagres, on the far southern tip of Portugal, up through Lisbon and to Fatima, then onto Santiago and then to the lighthouse at Finisterre.

About 850 kms.

Now I have to do just three things:

  • Figure out when to do it.
  • Make a film in the meantime.
  • Fix up my knee, because I still can’t walk properly.

  1. Bill,
“Once Bitten” huh? I’m going back to do the Camino Frances again this September and am already making plans to walk the Camino del Norte in 2014. Can you explain to me a reason that the Camino grabs hold and keeps reeling some of us back in? My only explanation is simply Once Bitten!
    Buen Camino,

    • Hi Arlene – yes, I don’t quite understand it either!

It is a little bit like malaria isn’t it. Once bitten it gets into your blood stream and you just can’t ever get rid of it.

But perhaps it’s not terribly “spiritually correct” to compare one of the world’s great sacred pilgrimages with one of the world’s great transmissible diseases!

  2. Sounds like a fantastic trip!!! That photo of the Finisterre lighthouse is most beautiful. My husband returned this afternoon from his SJdPP to Burgos Camino and he can’t wait for me to join him next year. I can’t wait either!!!

  3. Put it up on the wish wall Bill!
Where there is a will- there will always be The Way!

Good luck with your planning and as I have heard it said before, this phase IS the start of your next Camino.

    All the best
    Michelle.

    • Hey Michelle – you’re right, it starts NOW.

But like I said in the blog, I have things to do first, one of which is to make the film on intuition, and the other is to make sure my knee doesn’t give me problems like it did on this recent Camino.

Also, I’ve now started writing my eBook on my Camino. It expands on the blog, and it’s turning out to be very humorous.

But, I now have my sights set on this new Camino. I like the symmetry of it – lighthouse to lighthouse. Also, I very much want to go to Fatima – me, being a non Catholic!

    • Its the voice of the stars whispering to your spirit, Bill. Do you need me to carry your camera bag?

      Just kidding,of course

      Unless I can help………

      • Haha – ah Sister, yes, the whispers have begun.

Jen and I were in a train traveling from Santiago to Porto, and I glanced out the window and momentarily saw a pilgrim on a road down below looking at a map, obviously lost.

But from the train, I could see a yellow arrow that the pilgrim couldn’t see. I wanted to yell out and tell him – but then of course the train had moved on and the scenario was gone.

But at that moment, I knew I wanted to walk the Camino Portuguese.

  5. Hi Bill, great plan. Mine will be all mixed up. Part of Norte, Part of Portuguese and both Camino portions in Galicia. Ferrol to Santiago and then of course Finsterra – Muxia. A little bit of volunteering here and there, could put the Camino in remission – what you think? Somehow I doubt it, it’s a nice addiction. Looking forward to the e-book, so glad you decided to go ahead with it. Wishing you speedy healing of your knee, so you can heed the call of the Camino.

    • Thanks Ingrid. Your Camino sounds wonderful!

Yes, the ebook is kind of writing itself. And throwing up a bunch of things that I’d subsumed, or relegated.

      When are you off?

  6. Ahhhhh yes…the Sister said it well…..the Camino Whispers…..
I and everyone who has walked the Camino know them well….I hear them when I walk on stoney ground, (that delightful crunch noise) ….I hear them when I see an arrow, or a scallop shell or when Katmandu announces a sale. :0) My toes start to twitch with anticipation that another Camino is being planned.

    Your itinerary sounds perfect……Lighthouse to Lighthouse… I Like :o)

  7. Bill. Can’t keep a good man down. Get that knee back in perfect working order before you do and eliminate that issue. I never mentioned it, but I have torn both the medial miniscus and anterior cruciate in my left knee. Told I had to have surgery. Never have, and it is 95% good as always just by working it over the years and being sensible. I wondered if it would give me a problem, but it has not at all. Who knows, after I finish this one in to weeks, I might even be thinking of another. Maybe I will go with you and carry your cameras. 🙂 Steve

    • Hey Steve, I think you’re right. Instead of surgery, build up the muscles around.

I also have a section of my left foot numb from the walk – I think there’s a nerve pinched somewhere.

Takes its toll hey… But worth it!

  8. After our Camino in 2011 ( the 4th, because, yes, somehow the bug keeps biting), we visited Fisterra by bus and then travelled on to Portugal to meet up with my brother who has a house there and he took us to visit the lighthouse of Sagres. I think your idea is brilliant! My big dream would be to start in Montserrat, which I visited back in 1963 the day after I met Adriaan, my husband of nearly 49 years.

  9. Such an enthusiastic bunch. Did you read earlier this month about the man who just finished his 7 YEAR walk from the southern tip of Chile to the northern part of Alaska? Maybe one of you can start in Portugal and trek to the the southern tip of Korea, (Pusan) where you can then take a short ferry ride to Japan, hike up the islands to the closest point to Alaska where a short boat ride could put you in our northern most state. From there you could take the trek south to the southern most tip of Chile. If or when you walk across Texas, stop in for a visit. I’ll cheer you on.
Yeah, I got carried away. Just envious. Your travels and all yawls comments are delightful and let me travel vicariously. I did spend a week in the Galapagos is in 1995 and worked a couple of years in the early ’80’s in Korea and Japan (where my big regret is not taking the popular trip to Australia when I had the chance. See the world. Go for it!
