PC # 119 – Go Fund Me

Well, one thing leads to another.

Ingrid told me in a comment this morning that I should get on with making my PGS film. That I should ask for money.

And then I came upon that wonderful story in the news about the honest homeless man who received donations from a crowdsource funding site. So I checked out that site, called Go Fund Me, and one thing led to another and I set up my own page: PGS – The Film.

So here’s the link –Β http://www.gofundme.com/4er3jo

Feel free to send the link to anyone you think might be interested.

And we’ll see how we go!

  1. Must be something in the universe today. I was thinking, (wondering) if it might be possible to walk a sponsored Camino in the future to raise money for my son. For those who don’t know, I was married a long time ago. I have a 6’7″ 33 year old son who was scouted to play pro basketball. Six years ago he became a quadraplegic, and lives with me now so I can take on his complicated medical care. He was told a couple of years ago that locomotor retraining could eventually have him walking with a walker. That was exciting until they said the therapy would begin at $25,000. That was cruel, I thought -to tell him with one hand he could walk again, and take it away with the other, knowing we have no money. Do you think people might donate.to help him? Anyway, Bill -best of luck on your funding!! I’m sure its a great and deserving film! And the worst that can happen is someone says no -and then you try again. πŸ™‚

    • With a good plan, that should work. When I walked last year, I tagged on a fundraiser for Soroptimist International, for a very specific project. For me it was an easy thing to understand, sponsor a full amount or xxcents for each kms I walked. I have organized fundraisers in the past that ended up being very successful for the various organizations, but my Camino fundraiser ‘bombed’, people just didn’t catch on, not even my own S.I. club put out an effort. So whatever money was collected in the end, was from my family and friends. It bothered me for a while, but in the end, I was ok with it. I know I at least helped one person to get a scholarship.

I think Bill idea is great and somehow I feel that with the proper planning a sponsored Camino for your son Sister, would be successful.

      • Thanks, Ingrid. Its kind of a touchy situation, because if I set up a fundraiser and don’t get the money, it will just crush him. He’s such a good guy, and has handled his situation with so much courage and faith.

    • Hi Sister,

If you go onto the ago Fund Me website, it seems that it’s been set up for such things as donations for your son.

It was easy to set up, but they do require Facebook verification, to prevent fraud. So you’d need to set up a FB page, if you don’t already have one.

I am leaving a stone on every cairn along with a prayer for your son. I am also lighting candles in all the churches I visit.

    • Bonjour Sister Clare ., I am so sad to learn about your son situation.

I think you have to try everything to help him ,and he has to try everything to help himself and not being afraid of rejection, or failure. Just do it. You will have no regrets.
I just help a guy , that put up a Facebook page to raise money to buy the land where he has put up some years ago , a tiny and nice pilgrim refuge in an abandonned barn. The owner put the old barn and the land for sale ; 20000 euros, and the guy just put his bank account numbers on line and explain the situation .. He has raised more than 10000 euros. !! just do the same but your son has to be willing to open up and explain his case.
The name of the FB page and wed site is : casa de los dioses
The sum of 25000 dollars is not so high. It represents 25 personnes willing to give 1000 dollars each , OR 50 people giving 500, well only 49 because i pledge 500 . myself, or 500 people giving 50 dollars.
In my mind it is reachable.

Other thing : You are a wise and spiritual women . what about creating on line a spiritual counselling service against a donativo ? It will helps a lot of people and you and your son.
      Un abrazo , hermana

      • Marie, bless you, and thank you. I would love to put up a spiritual counselling site, but I need someone who could help me. Anyone?

          • We just set up a separate forum dedicated specifically for that purpose –

I would have to look into it, but to keep it private we could make that forum a members only – with you as a moderator, me too – and restrict it just to those people who you approve.

The spam issue is now nixed – Natacha did a great job – so that won’t be an issue.

          • Bill, if you could help me with that….( no rush because I have to go away pretty soon. )Although I wonder what the Bishop would think of me emailing spiritual advice from the back of the chapel during service! At any rate, it would be an answered prayer, especially with the added privacy of doing it from the forum!

          • HI Sister –

            no probs.

Let me know when you want to set it up, and I will do so.

As I say, the forum is spam free now, thank goodness, and so it will be a safe environment.

  2. Hmmm. In addition to appealing to your Camino group and fundraising online, you both might want to consider getting the story and the need out in a human interest story on local television. I’m constantly surprised at how much response that seems to get in Houston. Most stations like the kind of story you’re talking about particularly Sister and even gather the donations. In the states that gives them public service brownie points with the regulators.

    • Having worked in newspapers so long its usually me telling people what a great free tool it can be. I appreciate the suggestion, Barb, but Tyler isn’t able to get in a wheelchair right now, and he doesnt want the world to see him in bed and conclude all he ever does is lie around watching tv. He’s a professional online sportswriter for two major sites -but he doesn’t want to toot his own.horn either.Or have people misunderstand how little stringers are paid, and decide he can pay his own way. Three years ago when he came back to Ontario, I asked all the service clubs for help to build a ramp for the house. He was stronger then, and got around a bit. They all turned me down!. Finally my doctor bought the supplies and built it himself. I took pictures and wrote a story for the paper then -but even at that point, Ty wouldn’t have his picture in the paper.

      • Sister,
I wish you every success in raising funds to assist your son. However you decide to go about this will be the perfect way.
An english gentleman that Jenny, Britta and I walked with last year was sponsored for the kilometres he walked on his Camino. He was very chuffed as he raised thousands of pounds (sorry, I can’t remember exactly how much) for his favourite charity.
        Love to you and Tyler
