PC #86 – I miss walking…

I haven't walked since the Camino.

Since mid May.

My knee…

I really miss it. My walk. Through the vineyards, early in the mornings or late in the afternoons. Listening to my audio books.

I didn't realise how much I love walking. How much it's become a part of my life. How it set up my day, or calmed me down of an evening.

I saw the day when I walked.

I saw the clouds, I noticed the weather, I felt the rain and the sun.

I breathed.

I sweated.

My body worked as it should.

I miss that.

  1. Dear Bill,

And hopefully it won’t be long till you will be walking again!

How is the knee feeling now?

    • Hi Arlene,

With these Glucosamine tablets it’s feeling pretty good thanks.

I might start to do some short walks soon to see how it holds up.

Got to be all ok for next April!

      • Bill, how’s it going about the knee brace? The one I got is brand new, and really helps. I found mine after missing one on auction -there was a button for listing others things the seller had -what a treasure trove!

  2. Bill,

I have had three 2.5 mile walks in the last week and one half. None before that since the Camino. While I am not as big a fan of walking as you are, I would like to be able to walk distances again, and this time without my hips hurting. I started PT yesterday. I have glucosamine on the way, I take turmeric day and night and I just got some Voltaren Gel. So, I am going to attack the strains with a vengeance. So, I miss being able to walk long distances without pain more than I miss actually walking long distances.

Hope the knee continues to improve. How is the foot?

  3. I REALLY miss walking. I am in PT three times a week. Out if the wheelchair, and walking with crutches. Yippee! I have developed plantar fasciitis in my left foot, and an inflamed bursa on the top of my left foot. Slowing down the recovery a bit, but PT says we will get all the physical issues under control. I am a huge fan of Voltaren (thanks, Bill!) which I stockpiled while on the Camino. Also taking ibuprofen and icing my foot three times a day. It is slow going, but I am feeling optimistic. I will be such a happy camper when I can walk even a mile again. I just miss it so. Yes, I will have some cheese with my whine! Julie

    • Hey Julie. Seems like you are progressing. I started my PT yesterday, but my case is minor compared to yours. Little things mean a lot when they are taken away from you. Jill had plantar fasciitis and it is no fun. She had to quit because of it mid way thru the Camino. It is fine now. I had never heard of Voltaren until Bill’s blog, however, it is available via prescription in the US. I just got some and will start trying it on my hips. There are certain warnings about using it with some other drugs, including anti inflammatories like Ibuprofen, so if you have not read up on it you might want to. Good luck and hang in there. BTW, I did get the Harley. Let me know when you are going back to Alaska. I would do that.

      • Steve, i can’t answer that, I used them post injury. was the only way for me to continue walking. i believe they are antiflamatory as well. Since my bones were also mending as I walked, I used less, and less once in Santiago. It really depended on how much I was on my feet. stopped, once the cast was on.All I know my regular pills dud not help

    • Thanks Ingrid. I need to remember how easy medication is to get in Spain. I can’t take Voltaren, though -it plays havoc with my other meds, and as you say, is very hard on the stomach

          • Its also noble, Bill. Steves a real gentleman. Then we have to worry about you ; squishing birds, flushing toilets with evian water.I have to ask -if it was so important to you, why didn’t you just buy enough evian and flush your own toilet?

          • Sister –

with utmost respect, you just don’t get it. Can you imagine walking into the public urinals in Evian, doing your business, then pulling the chain?

And seeing all that Evian water slushing down, just to move on your bodily waste?

And then of course I went into a cubicle, and you can imagine the rest.

            That was poetry.

You can’t get the same sense of the majesty of the occasion by getting 12 x 1.5L bottles of Evian and doing it at home…

            Puleeeese….

            😀

        • HI Ingrid –

I was told there could be issues with long term usage of Voltaren tablets, so that’s why I never took them.

Then again, there are supposedly issues with long term usage of Ibuprofen, and I took 1800mg a day for 30 days – and I’m still standing, albeit favouring my left leg!!

          🙂

  5. What I miss is having a focus for my walking. I’m just not an “I’ll-just-walk-for-an-hour” kind of person. I miss knowing that I was heading into unknown territory and adventure lay ahead. Of course, I can try to wrap my head around that here and head out, but it just isn’t the same. And no matter how far I go, there’ll be a Metro I can jump on and return home.
    *sigh*
    It’s just not the same.

  6. Ok, just wanted to let you all know you gave me great joy this morning as I read this string. I guess I need to check in here more frequently!!! You are all too funny. I can’t wait to be a part of face to face conversation with you all. It is a perfect day for walking here today. Going to try to get a couple of hours in! XOXO Julie

  7. I miss walking too. My intention had been to walk the Bruce Trail in Ontario this year, end to end, a bit longer than the Camino. I wanted to get started in April and walk on weekends. First the weather was a bit tricky, then the Niagara Region was infested by ticks. Now I am very familiar with ticks, having lift surrounded by forests in Austria…. they are nasty creatures and can be rather dangerous to ones health. So I postponed, then there is mosquito and blackflies season… etc etc… there is always an excuse, if your heart isn’t truly in it and I would never have walked it by myself… the Camino is safer. lol.

My neighbor and I walked a bit, some days up to 15 kms. , but everything changed about 3 weeks ago when my mother in law got ill. This too shall pass and hopefully there will be nice enough weather in October (Indian summer – hopefully) for me to get in some hikes along the lakes.

BUT, in my dreams, each night… I walk the Camino! 😉

    • haha – Ingrid, if you walk the Camino in your dreams, it’s well and truly in your bloodstream.

      In your psyche.

      Which is fabulous.

Such a beautiful day here today. September 1st – the start of spring.

It’s been a cold winter in Mudgee. I just want to get out and start walking again.

I’ll set up my bike today, and watch the footy and pedal some miles, get my quads back to strength.

      you’re a gorgeous lady Ingrid.

      • No no no. Its August 31. Tomorrow is September 1st, the beginning of FALL. My favourite season, with cooler weather, school starting, a time of new projects and nesting down.for the winter.

  8. Ah Sister, Bill just wants to play the “wise 1 day older one”… and I too love Fall. That is why I walked September/October… the changes of the season even between those two months was wonderful. Spain was still very hot last September, and then almost over night, sliding into October the mornings and evenings became crisp.

we bump into new years one day ahead of you guys!
